I was “fed up losing” every week backing “shorties” and accumulating debts. It was really wrecking my head as I knew profits from betting are possible.
A key moment was reading the legendary trainer Vincent O’Brien’s autobiography. In it he spoke about how he had to gamble on his horses in the early days to make enough money from training.
His key statement was that he kept a yearly log book where he recorded all bets win or lose and therefore had a yearly profit and loss column which told the truth about how successful his betting was each year. He was managing his betting like a business recording each bet and using a betting bankroll.
As well as bankroll management and recording all bets the legendary gambler JP McManus said “patience” is the most important characteristic in successful punters.
Profitable punters like JP McManus know that betting is a long term game and if they lose a few bets just remain patient and wait for the next correct betting opportunity to arrive and under no circumstances go “chasing loses” like betting on horses whose form is not known very well at that time!
Finding value priced winners is not easy and requires a huge time investment in form study of horse racing including the owners and trainers involved. Not everyone has the time or passion for the job but I am lucky enough to really enjoy my work following horse racing for over 30 years
