The 33 Day Coffee Shop Makeover

I’m Matthew Scott. I opened Lemonjello’s Coffee in Holland, Michigan in 2003 and have spent the past 12 years turning it into a successful and sustainable business one day at a time.

In addition I am a coffee instructor around the United States, a four year barista competitor for the US Coffee Championships, and a coffee writer and blogger at CoffeeFoxhole.com.

I didn’t always have all the answers to success. In fact, after 8 years of operation I almost lost everything. But I turned my store around.

I hit a point in 2011 where I was broke. My corporate bank backed out on me. And I had no idea how I got there.

I had poured myself and all of my resources into this business. It was a success. We were known locally as a staple of our community and nationally by the tourists and students who passed through our town.

The business looked stable from the outside, but I was barely holding it all together behind the scenes. I was emotionally exhausted.

He thought the best I could hope for was to fix things just enough to sell it for enough to pay off debt. I thought about having to start over after giving almost a decade to this business. .

I asked questions. I tried different ways of doing things. I listened differently to my accountant. I took every category of the business and analyzed it. I micromanaged my inventory so I could always pay for orders with cash on hand. I cut out spending that didn’t have results. I called vendors and made better arrangements. I did whatever I had to in order to not lose my business.
